Late Shri G.N. Tripathi
(11.12.1933 to 09.06.2002)
Shri
G.N. Tripathi had been a crusader for dissemination of
knowledge through maximization of Library facilities. Shri
Tripathi graduated in 1956 and completed diploma in Library
Science in 1956 from the prestigious Banaras Hindu
University (BHU). Thereafter he had a short stint of six
years in the Library associated with BHU. Thus, God groomed
him into a good professional and developed capabilities for
organization of Library on Scientific basis with bias
towards user-friendly approach. He joined Oil & Natural Gas
Commission (ONGC), the Navratna Public Sector Ungdertaking (PSU),
in 1963. The small Library of ONGC in Naaz Building, 19,
Rajpur Road, Dehradun in 1963 blossomed into a full fledged
scientifically organized library in KDM Institute of
Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE), ONGC, Dehradun. As a result
of his zeal, desire and untiring efforts, the library, today
is one of the best in upstream petroleum sector in this part
of the world. He provided appropriate support to other ONGC
libraries located as far as Nazira in Assam, Chennai in
Tamilnadu, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Badodra in Gujarat and IRS
in Ahmedabad (Gujarat).
He actively participated in activities of Libary Association
Dehradun. He motivated training programmes in Library
science leading to award of certificate, recognised for
placement activities.
After superannuation in 1991, he continued his efforts
towards propagation of scientific knowledge amongst the
professionals. He established a publishing house, Indian
Petroleum Publishers (IPP) at Dehradun. This house started
the publication of INDIAN JOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY (IJPG)
which has become a well known journal in upstream petroleum
industry. He was always open to assist all those, who were
keen to publish their papers and books. He had demonstrated
his entrepreneurship by publishing PROCEEDINGS OF SECOND
SEMINAR OF PETROLIFEROUS BASINS OF INDIA, ONGC edited by Dr.
S.K. Biswas et al.; RECENT RESEARCHES IN SEDIMENTARY BASINS,
edited by Prof. R.N. Tewari, BHU and OIL & GAS FIELDS OF
INDIA by Lakshman Singh. His contributions have made it
possible to continue publication of IJPG and introduction of
the only INDIAN PETROLEUM DIRECTORY (IPD) in India. The
journal and the directory are regularly published as per
schedule and are highly appreciated in the industry. His
dream of dissemination of knowledge through publication is
being actively pursued by his publishing house INDIAN
PETROLEUM PUBLISHERS.
Unfortunately, the founder fatherly figure and leading light
of the INDIAN PETROLEUM PUBLISHERS left for heavenly abode
on 9th June, 2002. May God give peace to his noble soul.
